Wow!  Record breaking temperatures in Victoria this week!  A heatwave right across Canada!

At last! It’s summertime in Victoria!
One of the highlights of the summer for The Good Planet Company as well as many other locally owned environmentally aware businesses is the annual Organic Islands Festival, talking place this coming weekend (July 10th and 11th) at the beautiful 100-acre Glendale Gardens conservation park.
This solar powered, zero-waste outdoor festival features music, entertainment and more than 150 exhibitors from across Vancouver Island. It’s our chance to reconnect with our customers, soak up some sun, and have a fun filled weekend. We hope you’ll drop by our booth in The Green Collective area of the festival.

Organic Islands Festival 2010

Happy Earth Day from The Good Planet Company! Forty years after the very first Earth Day, our planet is under increasing stress from the demands of its resident 6.8 billion human beings.

Our customers frequently ask us exactly how does one “save the planet?” It’s so easy to become overwhelmed by the challenges we face from climate change, air and water pollution, habitat destruction and species losses. These issues, coupled with the baffling political processes in place to fix them, can make even the most optimistic of us wring our hands in frustration.

We think the best solution is to start out by saving ourselves, our families and our communities. Continue to reduce, reuse and recycle, to respect the cycle of nature, to live consciously, to act mindfully,  to support grassroots organizations and to live well with less.

People power is strong! Let your friends and neighbours know that a Green life is a good life. As Mother Theresa once said, “Do not wait for leaders. Do it alone, person to person”

Green Sleep king sized mattress

As you know, The Good Planet Company sells some very outstanding natural, organic mattresses!

Once a year, as part of our spring cleaning, we sell off one or two accumulated excess mattresses at a deep, deep discount. These mattresses may include store display models, mismatched products, and occasionally a non-defective customer return. This is not a marketing ploy that you might expect from a “big box” mattress retailer, it’s simply a way to move items of excess inventory that we cannot in good conscience sell for the regular price “fresh out of the box” since they have been opened. Both of this year’s surplus mattresses are being sold for significantly less than our dealer wholesale cost. This is a “once-a-year” opportunity and we have only two units available this year.

We have placed ads on Craigslist, Used Victoria and Kijiji in order to move a king sized “Green Sleep” mattress (normally $4098, but this one is $2500) and a king sized Good Planet futon (normally $2699 but this one is $1399).

These same mattress types in different sizes may be experienced in-store. The specific mattresses for sale are being held by our delivery service and will be professionally, courteously, delivered and set up in your Victoria-area home, included in the prices shown in the ads. Price does not include the foundation unit. You will need a ventilated, slatted bedframe or foundation unit. A standard polyester covered box spring is not adequate, as it does not allow the natural rubber to breathe. PST and GST are applicable to the price.

Good Planet king sized futon

It was Earth Hour last night, and the organizers estimated that 126 countries and territories, 4,000 municipalities and 100’s of millions of people across the globe took part.   Even the most hardened cynic would have to admit that each of us in our small way can help create a better planet and a better living environment for our fragile species.

Here at The Good Planet Company, we opened our February electricity bill yesterday… always something we do with trepidation … and were happy to see that our own efforts at saving energy are paying off.   By removing some light fixtures, reducing our heating and cooling, keeping our computers and other business equipment turned off when not in use, we have cut  electricity usage by 38% compared with February 2009!

Our challenge for 2010 is to gradually begin replacing our CFL light fixtures with LED’s and to find a dozen other ways to move our business through carbon neutral, and towards carbon negative!

Kudo’s to The Good Planet Company’s staff for always doing their part to ensure that EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY and EVERY HOUR IS EARTH HOUR!

We invited Eric Beamish, the supplier of our All Seasons Indoor “Bokashi” Composters, to drop by The Good Planet Company this afternoon, to answer customer questions and help spread the word about this amazingly effective and efficient composting system.
